Key Factors to Consider When Choosing Earplugs for EDM Concerts

There are many earplugs out there on the market that may claim to be good earplugs for concerts. If you have ever been to a festival, rave, or even live music, you know how loud it gets. Below are a few key factors to consider when looking into earplugs for these events:

  • Noise reduction rating – Often shortened to NRR, noise reduction rating is one of the most important factors to consider. On a scale of 1-30 and measured in decibels, the NRR rating shows the amount of reduction meant to be provided. If there is a higher NRR rating, there is a higher noise reduction provided.
  • Comfort and fit – If your earplugs for concerts are not comfortable, you will likely be less inclined to wear them. Additionally, if they do not fit correctly, they may not be as effective as they claim to be. Be sure to find the best earplugs for you and opt for something that is comfortable and fits well.
  • Durability and quality – As an avid music lover and concert-goer, I want to invest in a pair of earplugs for EDM concerts that will last. I would prefer something to be made of quality materials, so they are effective and last me for many years to come.
  • Ease of use – It’s important that once you take the step to bring earplugs to a concert, they are easy to access. You should purchase earplugs that you are not worried about losing and that you can easily use without taking away from your experience.

Discreteness and style – Many people do not want to wear earplugs to concerts or festivals because they are not necessarily a fashion statement. Getting earplugs you deem either discrete or stylish is important. They do come in many colors and forms, so you can pick the type most appealing to you!

Top 5 Best Earplugs for EDM Concerts

A. Eargasm Earplugs

Eargasm Earplugs are some of my favorite earplugs for EDM concerts. They have a sleek design, being mostly clear with the option for a pop of color at the base of the earplugs. They can reduce up to 21 dB of noise reduction without muffling noise. They have 2 different shell sizes for an adjustable fit and come with a compact carrying case. I have been able to clip mine onto a carabiner and clipped them onto my keys, wallet, or hydration pack at festivals.

These earplugs have received 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon, and often get praise for filtering just enough sound out. Their cute colors, discreteness, and comfortability, are highly regarded. My only fear is that I will misplace them because there is nothing to connect them, like a chord or a string. Other than that, they have great ratings and are around $40.00, which is more expensive than other brands. This brand is also the official sponsor for many festivals and creates custom earplugs for festivals such as Outsidelands, Lollapalooza, and Electric Forest. This also further ups their credibility.

B. Etymotic Research

Etymonic Research earplugs are fairly simple and do not have many colors to choose from. You can opt for blue, clear, or grey, and choose a standard or large fit. They come with a plastic carrying case and are connected by a chord. If used properly, they can provide up to 20db of sound reduction, making the fit extremely important. Fit is also important in terms of comfortability. The standard fit works well and provides comfortable wear along with more muted and less muffled noise.

These were the first earplugs I purchased when I started routinely going to concerts and festivals. The main reason I chose to start with these was because they were the cheapest option I could find. Around $13.00, these are a great budget-friendly option. They have 4.4 out of 5 stars on Amazon, and lasted me years before I decided to upgrade to Eargasm Earplugs. I also love the fact that they come with a chord, because I tie them around my neck for easy access. The only issue with these earplugs is that they are not the most discrete, making them visible from an outside perspective. If you are less worried about that, then they are a great option for starting out!

C. Loop Earplugs

With a big social media presence, it’s no surprise Loop Earplugs has made the cut as some of the best earplugs for EDM concerts. Loop Earplugs come in various metallic colors, mimicking jewelry in your ear. You can choose from black, silver, gold, and more. They also come with the largest variety of tip sizes, from XS to L, further providing customization. They have an NRR of 7 and can reduce up to 18 dB of noise.

Many of the 4.4 out of 5-star reviews on Amazon talk about how comfortable they are and how well they work. They also come with a cute case and seem very durable and long-lasting. The only major complaint seems to be that the tips of the earplugs feel cheap, which can be frustrating for someone paying around $35.00 for these earplugs. Despite this piece of feedback, the overall reviews for Loop Earplugs are very positive.

D. Mack’s Pillow Soft Silicone Earplugs

An earplug must-have for EDM festivals or events where you are camping overnight, are Mack’s silicone earplugs. They are designed to block noise, so I do not recommend wearing them for the show themselves, however, I have seen it done. They are also non-toxic, non-allergenic, and waterproof. They have a high noise reduction rating of 22dB, showcasing how well they block sound.

Because they are silicone, they are comfortable and can mold to your ears. I personally prefer them to foam earplugs as they do not fall out and fit my ear better. My only complaint is that if I wear them sleeping at festivals, they can sometimes get caught in my hair due to their tackiness. Other than that, Amazon users can agree that these are great for blocking sound while sleeping and are a great bang for your buck. With 4.5 stars out of 5 and 8 pairs for $9.00, you can expect to sleep great for the whole weekend!

E. Mack’s Ultra Soft Foam Earplugs

If you prefer foam earplugs to silicone earplugs, Mack’s Ultra Soft Foam Earplugs, are a great alternative for sleeping at festivals. With slow-release foam and low pressure, they are designed for ideal comfort. Additionally, the neutral color of the earplugs helps them easily blend in for a more discrete look. Again, these foam earplugs are ideal for sleeping or if you are prioritizing protection over the clarity of the music. They have the highest NRR of 33 dB, making them some of the most protective earplugs.

These foam earplugs are ideal for blocking all sound, and many utilize them when sleeping with those who snore. They have a high 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon, and come with 50 pairs for $8.99, making them extremely affordable.

How to Properly Use Earplugs at EDM Concerts

When looking at how to properly use earplugs at EDM concerts and beyond, it’s important to keep a few points in mind.

  1. Find a Comfortable and Correct Fit – Fit is crucial so that the earplugs do not feel uncomfortable and so that they work most effectively. If they are too loose, they may not be blocking enough noise. If they are too tight, they will be uncomfortable, and wearing them will not be an enjoyable experience.
  2. Clear Regularly – Utilizing a small brush or a damp cloth and water for cleaning can help take care of your earplugs and keep them ready for use. If you are wanting to use a cleaner, opt for a non-alcohol-based cleaner. Some sites even off cleaning kits, like this cleaning kit from Eargasm.
  3. Utilize Cases – In order to not squish or deform, and potentially lose earplugs, it’s important to utilize the case that they came in.

It’s important that you find the best earplugs for EDM concerts that fit your standards. Make sure that you are choosing the right ones for you, so you feel comfortable wearing them and have the most enjoyable concert experience that you can. Hearing protection is extremely important, and if you are an avid concert-goer, earplugs can drastically change if your hearing will get damaged over time due to the loud music. Do your future self a favor and protect your ears!
